Netflix’s New Record Holder

September 2025 — Netflix’s animated feature KPop Demon Hunters has officially taken the crown as the platform’s most-watched title of all time, surpassing even Squid Game Season 1. The film has racked up over 266 million views, making it not only a commercial triumph but also a cultural milestone.

Netflix’s New Record Holder

According to the latest figures, KPop Demon Hunters overtook Squid Game’s 265.2 million views, cementing its place as the biggest success in the streaming giant’s history. The achievement highlights both the growing global demand for K-pop–inspired stories and the expanding influence of Asian animation.

Sony’s Strategic Call

Sony Pictures executive Ravi Ahuja recently commented that the decision to debut the film on Netflix was the “right home” for the project. He explained that while a theatrical release could have been considered, the financial model and reach of Netflix made more sense. Ahuja also confirmed that future installments will be produced entirely under Sony’s banner, hinting at a growing franchise.

A Pop Culture Moment: The ‘Soda Pop’ Dance

The movie’s impact has stretched far beyond streaming. At the 2025 U.S. Open, tennis legend Novak Djokovic celebrated a victory by performing the film’s viral “Soda Pop” dance with his daughter. Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans called the moment “surreal” and celebrated how the story resonated across sports, music, and family culture.

More Than Just a Hit

While its flashy soundtrack—complete with Billboard-topping singles—helped boost popularity, the movie has also been praised for tackling deeper themes. The story of Rumi, an idol forced to hide her true self under the pressure of perfection, struck a chord with audiences worldwide. Issues of identity, shame, and healing are woven into the vibrant spectacle, offering both entertainment and emotional depth.
